Gabriele Klein - abstract
Barbaric modernity - modern barbarism

The impression is that the concept of the barbarian is once again booming since 9-11, above all when people talk about the ‘clash of cultures’ or attack on civilisation. It is interesting to note here what figure of thought is updated in the political dispute concerning international terrorism and what theory of modernism is referenced. The concept of the barbarian features implicitly or explicitly in various positions in theories of civilisation, modernity or modernism. The lecture opening the symposium sets out systematically to appraise the key theoretical perspectives, attempting to elaborate against this background the relevance of the concept in terms of a diagnosis of the age.
