The tragic is all too often repulsed. And yet it is essential in order to rouse us from indifference. Horror is constantly intruding in our everyday life, and in order to rid us of the poison it is necessary to reawaken our social conscience. This Macbeth is distilled from Shakespeare's tragedy. The scenes correspond and contradict each other at several levels; the personae do not exist but rather a recurrent stream of events in which only names change. It is not about a few specific dead people or a few specific massacres but rather all dead people, all massacres. The mechanism of power, as such, always destroys human life when it becomes an obsession. Macbeth, the bloodthirsty king, and his inseparable queen are as a single being whose weakness and courage are clear for us to see. We do not know when their paralysed mind will break at last. Perhaps they are mad from the start, or perhaps their madness is their salvation. The immeasurable guilt under whose weight they tremble gives them the appearance of human beings to bystanders.
