In the absence of greater contexts, individual life–drafts can become shaky, and many an experience of suffering is felt to be an existential crisis. If, on the other hand, we articulate our pain and anxiety, we can open a release valve and increase our chances of survival. For as long as we find words, we have not given up. We set signs of our own existence and – if we become the mouthpiece of the speechless – we assume mediator functions. Therein lies an educational, political aspect – even if literature is not capable of achieving immediate results. In this context, literature can assume functions of resistance. But above all it bears witness to the striving to live (to survive) and still stay human.
