Jean Fisher - abstract
Art, Globalization and the Ethics of In[ter]vention

The paper asks whether visual art is capable of performing any subversive or transgressive role in a mediated and instrumentalised world and in the face of the more deleterious consequences of globalisation. An attempt is made to link the call for a new concept of ethics with contemporary art practices, focusing on the encounter between the artwork and the viewer as a moment capable of generating a new perception and ethical truth about the world. The questions about transgressing established discourses and reinventing subjective agency are addressed through the notion of the ‘barbarian’ and the figure of the trickster as boundary violators, and conclude with some thoughts about art and the storytelling function.
