In Desire, Beat Furrer projects the ancient Orpheus myth into the acute situation of our present day: in his reading of events and history he follows strangely winding paths with the intention of forcing open the gaps and hollows spaces that have built up around these episodes from the twilight of history. His Orpheus metamorphoses are variations on the forbidden look, this one and only wrong move, as we know with fatal consequences. From various perspectives, the piece orbits, mirrors and reflects the broken myth again and again. Furrer's sound horizons cancel out the moment, focussing time and history. Thus, Desire becomes a kind of mythical shorthand, a music of fate, in which it is not really granted to anyone to escape the spell. The search for the other condition ends in solitude redoubled. The concert première of this commissioned work already featured in steirischer herbst 2001, the stage adaptation by Reinhild Hoffmann with a set by Zaha Hadid will round off steirischer herbst 2002 and kick off Graz 2003 – Cultural Capital of Europe.
